2009 Playoff Bracket After reviewing historical playoff situations, AASL will use a new playoff bracket in 2009. Historically, when all teams were in the playoffs (all but 2 years of our first 9), only 4 teams ranked 9 through 16 advanced to the second round or further. [2008 was a notable exception, with the 9th ranked team playing in the championship game.] Many of the first-round games were blowouts which were not fun for the losing team and not challenging for the winning team.To try to make the 2009 playoffs more balanced, teams 9-16, then teams 5-8, and finally teams 1-4 will participate in subsequent rounds. The advantage is that more of teams ranked 9-16 will have the opportunity for a competitive first-round game and subsequent teams will have the opportunity for more competitive second round games. The disadvantage is that a team ranked 9 through 16 could potentially have 5 playoff games and could play 3 times in one week, while a team making it to the finals could have 3 games, where in past years these teams have played 4 games. Below is a representative bracket, though the matchups shown below may not necessarily be assigned to these weekdays in August:
