AASL Rule Changes

At the annual captains' meeting on Tuesday, April 21, AASL captains (representing 11 of 16 teams) and administrators voted and accepted two rule changes designed to make AASL more enjoyable for all participants and safer for baserunners and catchers. The two rules, paraphrased pending specific wording, are:

Move the outfield cones to 170 feet (from 150 feet): AASL marks an arc in the outfield that designated a line in which all "outfielders" must start. Note that a "short fielder" or "fourth outfielder" may start within the arc on any part of the grass.

The effect of this rule is to provide more opportunity for mid-range hitters to successfuly reach base.

Allow "home plate" for a runner to include all of the green mat: In an effort to make plays at home safer and to avoid collisions, a runner has the option to use any part of home plate or the green mat when reaching home plate. The rationale is to provide distance between a runner and defensive player who may be receiving a throw at the plate.

On force plays, the defensive player is still required to use home plate (the exposed white part as well as the covered triangle/back of the plate) to force an out.

There was also a proposal to staff 2 ASA umpires per playoff game where in 2008 each first- and second-round playoff game had 1 ASA umpire and the final two rounds has 2 ASA umpires. We will decide on this later in the season.
