ASA rule on a foul ball caught by the catcher This is FYI since there was discussion at the field on Wednesday, July 30, during a game. A batter fouled the ball back to the catcher who moved her glove up and to the side to catch the ball while in a squatting position (i.e., lower than the batter).See http://www.softball.org/umpires/clarifications_2006_jan.asp. The generally-understood concept of the ball rising to at least "the height of the batter's head" is no longer in ASA rules, however most of the players on both sides thought that was the measure for the proper ruling. While it will require an informed volunteer player/umpire to recognize this play as an out in a regular-season AASL games (though it should be called properly if any participating player/umpires or captains read this!), we should all be aware of the rule since ASA umpires will likely call it correctly during playoffs.
