What was up with the lights? What was up with the Lights? On Tuesday, May 27, 2008, we believe a Musco light pole at Elm Street field was struck by lightning in a fairly violent storm. There were NStar problems elsewhere in the school complex on Elm Street.Based on field conditions, we canceled games for that night and canceled the automated schedule for the lights that night. On Wednesday, May 28, 2008, Rockets and Nightmare played the late game and reported that the only some of the lights came on on schedule and the outfield was dark. Starting Thursday, May 29, 2008, the Recreation Department began to investigate the issue. Over the course of the investigation, they found 7 fuses blown in the left field light pole, a fixture (1 of 6 or 8 on that pole) was not functioning, and 2 contactors blown in the electrical box behind the backstop. Parts were ordered. On Wednesday morning, June 4, 2008, Island Light & Power, Jack Blais, and the Recreation Department met to review the setup and later that day, the electricians returned to replace the contactors and test the lights. As of 4:00 PM on Wednesday, June 4, Island Light & Power had restored the fuses and contactors and the lights were back on schedule and working. However, on Monday, June 9, the lights were once again off-schedule. This was due to a component failure of the automated scheduling meters inside the electric box. After hunting down the key to the lock, we manually turned on the lights and finished the game in progress. Continuing through Wednesday, June 18, the lights were operated manually by AASL unlocking the box each night and captains locking up. On June 18, the Recreation Department completed the repair work at Elm Street and the lights are back on schedule! Play ball! Published on 6/23/2008 4:22:02 PM by Matt Murphy(matt@actonasl.com) |
